Genealogy was an interest which David shared with several members of Marjorie's Ney family. Early on he obtained a family tree that clarified our vague knowledge that we were related to Albert Einstein. Prepared professionally, the diagram showed clearly the links to Ruppert Einstein, the ancestor that Marjorie and I share with the Nobel prize-winner.

David shared an interest in railways with my husband Peter, and recently lent him some specialist books from his collection. The two subjects informed each other. David was justly proud of his father, who wrote a vivid memoir describing his life as a fireman on steam locomotives that was featured in Who Do You Think You Are magazine.
